The stand featured a unique design approach allowing the designer, architects, artists, advertisers and merchandisers to visualise practical application of our products in both retail and architectural settings.
There was overwhelming interest shown in our ability to hide the light source within retail shelving applications while illuminating the entire shelf area evenly, and in our ability to backlight ultra-thin and curved backlighting applications, offering for the first time, a low cost simple method of presenting products from electronics to clothing in the best possible light.

New Product Launches
In April 2014 under the very proud and patriotic Scottish banner of ‘The Clan’, we are excited to be launching Design LED Products first two sets of products which best deliver the competitive advantage of our technology.
Clan Shelf introduces what we believe to be the world’s thinnest shelf lighting solutions in two models, only 6mm and 2mm deep, and named romantically Edinburgh and Clyde after the famous Scottish castle and river.
Clan Backlighting & Signage introduces the first examples of what we also believe to be the world’s first truly customisable, double sided and curvable backlighting and signage named after Scottish Lochs. Ness is our High Density, performance optimised backlighting solution, accompanied by Lomond our low density, cost optimised product offering.
Future products and applications are in the pipeline focussing heavily on customisation and integration, however, we also look to our partners and customers to ask the question, “How would you like to use this unique technology to solve your LED lighting challenges and grow your own business”?
With your help and support, we aim to capitalise on our combined competitive advantage and realise our full potential in LED lighting – winning more awards, but more importantly achieving considerable business success in one of the most exciting industry sectors in the world today.
I invite you to contact me or any of my team should you wish to investigate using our products and technology and joining us on our journey.
Yours with kindest regards,
Stuart Bain CEO

Shelf illumination at a market leading figure of 7 watts/meter
During 2012, Design LED has continued to optimise the design of their LED light tile for shelf lighting applications.
By making changes to the size, optical components and light scattering pattern printed onto the light tile, light is directed to only where it's needed with emission of light in other directions significantly reduced.
Current products give illumination levels 1200 lux on the shelf surface, 400 mm from the source.
Power consumption is only 7watts/meter and approximately half of LED competitors. Additional advantages are a reduction in: CO2 emissions, unwanted heat and air conditioning costs.
With a depth of only 2mm in-store damage risk is minimal and the light can mounted in a low profile housing or recessed into the shelf.
The image above shows Beam angle profile of the light tile alongside a demonstration unit of cool & nuetral white light.
If you wish to discuss a shelf lighting application or make an appointment to view the demonstration, please contact Design LED on +44 1506 592310 or email@example.com

Halo luminaire launced at Tent show in London
Blue Marmalade launch their stunning Halo lamp at TENT show in London in Sept-12.
Based on a thin, circular LED light tile from Design LED, the effect is of thin "floating" surface of light
The luminaire has "5 degrees of freedom" whereby the use can orientate the upper arm and illuminated head in virtually any direction.
The Light tile generates a directional and not a diffuse light beam. A rotating head allows the user to direct light to where it's wanted without having the light source directly overhead.
The Halo luminaire will be available in early 2013. Retailers, Distributors or end-users can register interest by contacting Blue Marmalade on Tel: +44 131 553 7766
Lightfair Las Vegas May-12
Following on from Light & Building, Lightfair in Las Vegas was smaller in size but more focused on the Lighting market.
Suppliers and manufacturers of lighting components, materials and systems were present.
As seen in the Light & Building show, there were many commodity LED flex-strip products, edge-lit LED panels and lots of metal housed LED modules.
There was a lot of promotion of high Colour Rendering Index (CRI) solutions to the retail sector.
It's clear that retailers understand that High value/performance lighting products improve the appearance of products and increase sales!.
From a technology perspective, there was little differentiation between many lighting products. Each seemed to use a slightly different recipe from the existing/mature illumination & optical technologies.
Everyone we met and showed this to were very impressed by both the decorative and functional aspects of the technology and wanted to source samples - so much to do & follow up on!
Light & Building - Frankfurt
We made our first visit at Light and Building last week. It's was good to see the lighting sector is still very buoyant in Europe as the show was very busy and well attended.
In general, there were many LED lighting fixtures and systems with only a few fluorescent lamp products.
Going around the various halls there was a lot of repetition of low end products including : LED flexible strips, LED "fluorescent tubes" and edge-lit tiles.
All things being equal, only low cost or a brand name will give differentiation in this sector.
More interestingly, there were a number of companies who were demonstrating the value-add of LED technology in retail lighting. Products giving high colour rendering index or different spectral distributions depending on the product to be illuminated were shown with demonstrations using real product in refrigerators e.g. meat and vegetables look better with different colour spectra.
OLED technology was in abundance. However, it seemed only limited to decoration and large one-off installations. Apparently it is still very expensive and much lower performance than other more conventional lighting technologies. Both OSRAM and Philips had large and interesting OLED art installation on their stands.
Design LED announces a £1m+ equity investment from current & new investors.
